The liturgical tapestry, church tapestry or altar tapestry has a history extending back to the fifteenth century when hand woven tapestry was used primarily to communicate biblical messages and imagery to a largely illiterate congregation. Today, the tradition of using a hand-woven tapestry as a focus of the worship environment still flourishes as church interior designers take advantage of the infinite varitey of imagery and style, and the rich color palette made accessible by contemporary high quality natural fibers and the ability to accommodate impressive dimensions on large vertical handlooms.
Although it is sometimes possible to purchase a ready–made wall hanging, the specific interests and spiritual needs of a congregation may be better served by commissioning a tapestry that is both designed and woven by the tapestry artist who will work closely with the congregation in developing a particular theme and style.
Large scale tapestries are often an integral part of the interior design of new worship spaces. However, large-scale tapestries may also be introduced into an existing building where they can be designed to bring a sense of harmony to the often disparate architectural and decorative elements of the church interior which have evolved over the years.
